Prof. Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque

Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque joined the Department of Microbiology at the State University of Bangladesh as a Professor, bringing with him more than 40 years of distinguished experience in teaching, research, and academic leadership. Prior to joining the university, Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque served in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Dhaka for nearly four decades, where he held the positions of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Selection Grade Professor. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and contributed significantly to academic administration and student welfare through various university committees and leadership roles.

Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque earned his B.Sc. (Honours) in Botany and M.Sc. (Thesis) in Microbiology from the University of Dhaka, receiving the Merit Award for his outstanding academic performance. He obtained his Ph.D. from Okayama University, Japan, in 1997 and was awarded the Japan Ryobiteien International Foundation Award for his outstanding research in Biotechnology. He also completed postdoctoral research at the National Food Research Institute (NFRI), Japan, under the United Nations University Fellowship and later served as a Visiting Scientist at the same institute.

An internationally recognized expert in Microbial Biotechnology, Food Microbiology, and Bioresources, Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque pioneered research on the extraction of the rare bioactive oligosaccharide Panose and the enzyme Glucosyltransferase from *Streptomyces hygroscopicus* subsp. *Limoneus*, a discovery that was patented in Japan. He established the Food Microbiology Research Laboratory at the University of Dhaka and led numerous collaborative research projects with national and international organizations, including icddr,b, BCSIR, and Japanese research institutes.

Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque has supervised a large number of MSc, MS, M.Phil., and Ph.D. students and has published more than 75 research articles in reputed national and international peer-reviewed journals. He has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences, seminars, symposiums, and workshops, presenting his research on various scientific platforms worldwide.

In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Hoque has made remarkable contributions to professional and scientific organizations. He served as President, Vice President, and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Society for Microbiologists (BSM), held leadership positions in the Japan Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh (JUAAB), Dhaka University Microbiologist Alumni Association (DUMAA), and Okayama University Alumni Association (OUAA), and has been associated with several prestigious scientific societies as a life member. He also served as Chairman of the Food Hygiene and Safety Management Committee of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and as a member of the Technical Committee of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA), contributing significantly to national food safety and public health initiatives.
