SUB English Department Organizes Educational Theater Visit to Oedipus Rex
From Text to Stage: An Academic Journey with Oedipus Rex
State University of Bangladesh (SUB) embarked on an enriching academic tour that took literature beyond the pages of a text and into the world of live performance.
Students from Batches 59โ61 attended the Bengali stage production of Sophoclesโ Oedipus Rex, organised by Drishyokabbo. The play was staged at Bangladesh Mahila Samity, Bailey Road, Dhaka. The visit was designed as part of an assignment titled โFrom Text to Stage: A Documentary Analysis of the Bengali Production of 'Oedipus Rex"," allowing students to critically explore how a classical Greek tragedy is transformed, adapted, and reimagined for a contemporary Bengali audience.
Rather than simply reading Sophocles, our students had the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the tragedy on stage, observing acting, direction, staging, lighting, music, costumes, adaptation, and audience response.
The tour was conducted under the guidance of the course teacher Tanjina Binte Amin, Lecturer, Department of English Studies. Associate Professor Paren Chandra Barman and Assistant Professor Sadat Hasan accompanied the students throughout the academic visit.
This experience offered our students a valuable opportunity to connect literary text, theatrical performance, cultural adaptation, and critical interpretation, reminding us that literature does not merely belong on the page; it can come alive on the stage.
